You see, different people have different times of the day when they tend to be the most productive. This time of the day is referred to as your peak time. If you schedule your workload around this peak time, you can expect every day to be a productive day.

But most people don’t do this. Instead, they create a long to-do list that will take all day to complete. And then they just work steadily throughout the day, never accommodating for the fact that they’re going to have highs and lows.

For example, many people tend to feel sleepy after lunch, especially if they’re eating fast-burning carbohydrates or big meals. That’s because your energy soars right after eating, often due to a “sugar rush” – but when you crash, you crash hard. Sometimes it’s hard to keep your eyes open.

Another example…

Some people are “morning birds,” and they spring out bed alert and ready to tackle any task. But by late afternoon, the early birds are starting to struggle. And by evening, the early birds tend to be at their lowest productivity levels of the day.

The opposite is true of the “night owls.” Night owls don’t feel like their day is getting started until the afternoon. Then when evening hits, they get a surge of energy and are ready to be productive.

Chances are, you already know if you’re a morning bird or night owl. And you probably know approximately what hours of the day you tend to be the most alert, focused and productive.

If you know all this, then start scheduling your workload around these hours. In particular, schedule your most difficult tasks during these hours, as you’ll be more likely to complete the job.

If you’re not sure what time of the day is best for you, then you need to start keeping a journal. For the next week, record every hour how you feel in terms of alertness and productivity. Also note how much you actually get done each hour.

At the end of the week, you should know your peak times and your hours of lowest productivity. Once you start scheduling your work around your peak hours, you should see your productivity shoot up like a turbo-charged rocket!

Indeed, it’s not a surprise if you have a tendency to be perfectionist at times. Ever since you were young, the drumbeat of perfectionism has been beating in rhythm to everything you do. Your parents and teachers probably told you, “Always do the best job you can.”

And now that you’re an adult, you can’t quite shake the feelings of guilt when you turn out something that’s not perfect. If it’s not perfect, then you probably didn’t do your best.

But here’s the thing: Sometimes we need to sacrifice quality just a little in order to gain the enormous advantages that speed brings us. This is especially true in business.

Think about it…

If you spend two months “perfecting” a product and then another month or so “perfecting” your sales process before you ever release the product, you’ll fritter away three or four months without making a dime. But if you release the product almost immediately and THEN work on improving it, you’ll actually make money the entire time!

Now maybe releasing a product first and improving it later doesn’t sound right to you. But just observe what big business does, and you’ll see they do exactly the same thing. For example, car makers roll out new cars quickly, and then later put stronger engines and better features in them. Software companies (like Microsoft) release software and then later fix the bugs with “patches” and upgrades.

And you know why they do it? Because getting products to market makes them rich. If you’re in business, you should be doing the same thing. Indeed, even your personal life can improve by finishing things fast and making improvements later.

Bottom line: People who are successful in business don’t necessarily strive to get it right the first time. Indeed, one of the biggest teachers is experience… and you can only gain experience when you stop being a perfectionist and start living life and running your business.

Incidentally, that also happens to be one of the quickest ways to getting rich, too. Ask a millionaire if his products and sales pieces are perfect, and I guarantee he’ll say no… at least not at first. But he’ll tell you that persistence and speed are far more important than perfection.

You think up a great idea. Maybe it’s a business idea that you just know will be profitable. Or perhaps it has something to do with your personal life, such as you coming up with idea of remodeling your bathroom yourself. Either way, you start taking immediate action on your idea.

On the surface, the concept of taking immediate action sounds great. Indeed, productivity experts (and that includes me) suggest that you do take immediate action on ideas.

But here’s the thing: You need to take the right kind of action. And ideally, that means you should start by bouncing your ideas around with a trusted individual or group… especially if you have a big idea that will take time to implement.

The reason is because if you jump into a big or complex idea without first carefully thinking it through, you’re liable to waste a lot of time (and probably a good amount of money, too).

For example, let’s suppose you took action on your business idea, but only later discovered that there are plenty of legal roadblocks that could tangle you up and slash your profit. You could waste months and thousands of dollars before realizing you need to abandon the idea.

Or what if you started ripping up the old flooring in your bathroom immediately after conceiving of the re-tiling idea… only to discover later that the project is going to be about triple your original estimate. You’d have to just grit your teeth and buy the new flooring since you already ripped up the old flooring.

Those are just two examples… but this sort of thing can happen to any of our projects and ideas. Even if we think it through carefully, sometimes we’re just too close to the idea to see all the potential pitfalls. And sometimes we’re just too excited about the ideas to hear our own voice of reason coming through.

That’s where a mastermind group comes in. This is your group of trusted friends and advisors that you meet with each week either on a conference call or for a breakfast or lunch meeting. Everyone shares what’s going on with their business. And anyone who needs to bounce ideas around will get opinions from the nonbiased members.

Yes, it takes a little more time up front. It may feel like you’re using valuable time. But you boost your productivity in the long run. End result? You only pursue ideas that make good sense. And that saves you time, money and a whole lot of frustration!

You have likely accessed plenty of web pages where a pop up screen asks you to opt in. You need to fill in your name and your email address. Generally they will offer you something for free such as information. While you do get that, they also are able to send you promotions and offers via email.

All of the materials that a business sends you have to offer a link at the bottom to remove yourself from their mailing list. It they don’t, they can be fined if someone files a report with the FCC. As the owner of a business, you need to have excellent customer service in place to take care of this. Make it a priority to remove such email addresses from your list within 24 hours.

Another problem was explicit materials being sent to email accounts. Under the CAN-SPAM Act they have to be clearly identified in the subject line. This way the recipient knows what they will be opening may be offensive in nature to them. Placing a false message link that is misleading can also lead to huge fines.

Sometimes the material that you send can be classified as SPAM by accident. This is one of the biggest problems with the CAN-SPAM Act. If you use common words found in SPAM such as dear friend, free, or other trigger words you can end up being investigated for it. You will find the process of getting out from under such interrogations is difficult and time consuming.
